Portrait of Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton at age 19, painted by Edward Harrison May, 1881

Edith Wharton

The Mount was the beloved country estate of Edith Wharton, designed and built by the author herself in 1902 as a retreat in the Berkshires where she could write and entertain.

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was one of America's most distinguished authors and a prominent figure in New York high society during the Gilded Age. Born into wealth and privilege, Wharton became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 for her novel "The Age of Innocence."

Throughout her prolific career, Wharton published more than 40 books, including novels, short stories, poetry, and works on design and travel. Her masterful novels, such as "The House of Mirth" and "Ethan Frome," offered incisive commentary on American society and the constraints placed on women of her era. Her keen observations of the upper classes and their customs established her as a chronicler of Gilded Age New York.

Beyond her literary achievements, Wharton was a woman of refined tastes and vast intellectual curiosity. She maintained an extensive personal library that reflected her wide-ranging interests in literature, history, art, and philosophy. While you're visiting, we encourage you to explore the library and view this remarkable book collection, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of America's greatest writers.

The House

By the time her husband Edward Wharton purchased the land in Lenox in 1901, Edith Wharton was already an accomplished designer and authority on architecture and interior decoration. Just two years earlier, she had co-authored "The Decoration of Houses" with architect Ogden Codman Jr., a groundbreaking work that challenged the ornate Victorian aesthetic and advocated for classical principles of balance, proportion, and restraint.

Drawing on these principles, Wharton took an active role in designing every aspect of The Mount. She worked closely with architect Francis L.V. Hoppin and her niece, landscape designer Beatrix Farrand, to create the elegant house and surrounding gardens. The result was a harmonious integration of architecture and landscape that reflected her deep understanding of classical design and her belief that a home should be both beautiful and livable.

Each room of the house served a distinct purpose in the rhythm of daily life and entertainment. The library was the intellectual heart of the home, housing Wharton's extensive book collection and serving as a retreat for reading and conversation. The formal dining room accommodated elaborate dinner parties, while the drawing room and terrace provided spaces for afternoon gatherings and contemplation of the landscape. The gallery, with its soaring ceiling and architectural details, connected the public and private spaces of the house. In her light-filled bedroom overlooking the gardens, Wharton wrote some of her most celebrated works, including "Ethan Frome" and "The House of Mirth."

The Gardens

Garden plan of The Mount

The gardens at The Mount were particularly important to Wharton, who designed them as a series of outdoor "rooms" that extended the living spaces of the house into nature. These formal gardens, with their carefully planned sight lines and seasonal plantings, demonstrate Wharton's mastery of landscape design and her ability to create spaces that were both aesthetically pleasing and deeply personal.

The gardens transformed dramatically with each season, offering ever-changing vistas and experiences. In spring, bulbs and early perennials brought the first colors to the formal beds. Summer saw the gardens at their peak, with abundant blooms in the Italian Garden and shaded retreats along the lime walk. Autumn brought rich foliage and the final flowering plants before winter's quiet beauty settled over the estate. Wharton carefully orchestrated these seasonal transformations to ensure year-round interest and beauty.

From 1902 to 1911, The Mount served as Edith Wharton's summer residence and creative sanctuary. Though Wharton left The Mount in 1911 following her separation from Edward, the estate remained a testament to her vision and creativity. Today, the meticulously restored house and gardens offer visitors the opportunity to experience the spaces where one of America's greatest writers lived, worked, and found inspiration.
